Calibration of Electronic Control Unit (ECU) of an Automobile

 Industrial Problem for Innovation /

An electronic control unit (ECU), also known as an electronic control module (ECM), is an embedded system in automotive electronics that controls one or more of the electrical systems or subsystems in a car or other motor vehicle. ECU controls a series of actuators on an internal combustion engine to ensure optimal engine performance. It does this by reading values from a multitude of sensors within the engine bay, interpreting the data using multidimensional performance maps (called lookup tables), and adjusting the engine actuators. Before ECUs, air–fuel mixture, ignition timing, and idle speed were mechanically set and dynamically controlled by mechanical and pneumatic means.

Auto sector of our Nation needs support in calibration of an ECU for optimal performance and acceptable emissions. For a particular engine, there are several parameters in the ECU software that have to be adjusted.
